Micro-needling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself when it suffers from physical damage. Immediately after an injury to our skin, the body begins the healing process by triggering new collagen synthesis. The Dermapen® is an FDA approved micro-needling device that is used to cause these micro-injuries. Micro-needling has been shown to reduce the visibility of acne scars, reduced the size of enlarged pores, and smooths out fine lines and wrinkles. It may also help improve skin tone and texture resulting in smoother, firmer and younger looking skin without the side effects and downtime of other laser treatments. Micro-needling is safe for all skin types.

How does the Dermapen work?
The concept of micro-needling is based on the skin’s ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage. Immediately after an injury occurs, our skin dissolves old damaged tissue and replaces it with new, healthier skin tissue. Dermapen allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” in the skin which triggers new collagen and elastin synthesis, yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin.
At Northwest Dermatology & Research Center, Dermapen procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of the sterile Dermapen needle head by a licensed laser technician/aesthetician. All procedures are performed in a medically supervised clinic, with a level of service that our patients have come to know, appreciate and value as part of their approach to skin care.
Dermapen treatments are especially effective for aging concerns such as wrinkles, lines, folds and crow’s feet. General lack of skin radiance, stretch marks and scarring are also indications for micro-needling.
How will I look and feel after the treatment?
Treatments have been described as an electric toothbrush rubbing against your skin. Numbing cream is applied prior to the micro-needling to decrease any discomfort felt with the procedure.
After the procedure your skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After three days there is little evidence that the procedure has taken place.
How many treatments will I need and how quickly are results visible?
Each person’s skin conditions are different and require different levels of treatment. Those with mild wrinkles and fine lines may see improvement after just one treatment while more advanced skin conditions like acne scarring may need 4-6 sessions.
Visible results of skin rejuvenation are generally seen after just 6-8 weeks following the procedure, and improve further over time.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with micro-needling?
Dermapen micro-needling does not involve injections and therefore allergic reactions and side-effects are unlikely to occur. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (approximately 24 hours), involves rapid healing and requires simple after-care.
Side effects experienced with the Dermapen will usually subside within 48 hours. They may include red or pinkish skin, stinging, itching and/or tightness of the treated area.
